Amira Hanania

In America and as women we are given so many opportunities. Although we may be short changed because of our gender, for the most part we are allowed to express ourselves freely. I believe we take freedom of speech and alternative news for granted. Everyone has an opinion and is able to use whatever available resources to broadcast them. We are able to use different outlets (newspaper, TV, radio) while in some other countries women aren't even allowed to speak their minds.
While researching women's news networks and alternative news outlets for women by women I came across this very short but almost unbelievable article. It was called Meet Palestine's Only Independent Female Journalist. Her name is Amira Hanania and she is known as Palestine's only lead female journalist working for Ma'an News, Palestine's only independent news source. She has made it her mission in life to be the voice of and FOR women in Palestine. In the documentary Live from Bethlehem she is quoted saying "If you are a women, you are going to face many obstacles. If you are women, usually, they don't respect you. To achieve what I am doing now, right now- is like everybody to see that women can do men's good stuff." Her reporting covers issues from the war, to marriage laws. She uses different mediums; such a radio and TV. No matter what your religious views, political stance, or gender I believe it is impossible to see Amira Hanania as nothing less than an inspiration toward strength and courage!
