Off Our Backs: The Feminist Newsjournal

Off Our Backs has been in publication since 1970, which makes it the longest surviving feminist newspaper in the U.S. This is a news journal that is written by, for and about women and is run by a collective of contributors. Off Our Backs strives to provide news and informations about feminist activity, women's conditions and experiences around the world, and feminist and lesbian culture. Their mission is seeking equality for women world wide. In addition they also serve as a forum for feminist ideas and theory. The content of the journal varies from news type articles to personal accounts of women's experiences with descrimination or violence or the effect of mainstream media on women's lives. The collective is made up of six women and the publication staff consists of four different women. On their website they state the meaning behind the title of their news journal: "We must strive to get off our backs, and with the help of our sisters to oppose and destroy that system which fortifies the supremacy of men while exploiting the mass for the profit of the few. Our position is not anti-men but pro-women. We seek through the liberation of women, the liberation of all peoples".

The role of gender in the publication is basically the premise of it. This is a publication that was created for women by women to further the rights and awareness of women. It is not aimed at a male audience, though men would undoubtedly benefit from and learn from the stories and information produced by Off Our Backs. One thing that this publication has achieved is forming a following of women who are dedicated and interested in advocating for the rights and equality of women world wide.
