Women's Feature Service - WFS

Founded in 1978, WFS is the only international women's news & features syndicate. They operate globally, with writes in 40 different countries, and they focus on world issues from a gender perspective. WFS was started out of an initiative to impact the mainstream media and they received funding from UNESCO. In 1991, WFS became a fully independent organization. It's headquarters are in New Delhi, India and has an all-women staff. At the time of it's transition into an independent organization, they launched a website: www.wfsnews.org.
WFS has been among the first to report on issues like: AIDS and its impact on women and sexuality, the effects of the break-up of the Soviet Union on women, and the growing power of the Taliban in Afghanistan.
The reports issued by WFS are published by small and large newspapers, magazines, journals, and newsletters all over the world.
Some of the articles they have recently reported are on the value and importance of wearing the Hijab in Turkish society and how it is becoming a symbol of haute couture, and how the Bhil women of India are fighting to protect their forests from deforestation.
They also have a section called "Theme of the Month" on their website, where they focus on specific topics. This month's theme is Women & Conflict. They are presenting these theme through different articles talking about women across the world suffering from the trauma of war and conflict. Some examples of articles are "Children of Conflict" in India and the "Iraqi 'Anne Frank'", about a 24-year old girl woman who posts anonymously on a blog describing her experience and the reality of living through war and occupation in Iraq.
