Women's eNews

Women’s eNews is a nonprofit internet-based daily news source for women and people who care about women.

Launched in 2000, Women’s eNews mission statement is that it is “the definitive source of substantive news--unavailable anywhere else--covering issues of particular concern to women and providing women's perspectives on public policy. It enhances women's ability to define their own lives and to participate fully in every sector of human endeavor.”

This online women’s information source was an idea founded in 1996 by the Barbara Lee Family Foundation and hosted by the NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund. NOW Legal Defense underwrote in 1999 the creation of Women's eNews as an Internet-based news service for all women, with an emphasis on being a resource for commercial media. In 2002, NOW Legal Defense decided Women's eNews could sustain its success and stand on its own. So, Women's eNews became independent on January 1, 2002.

Women’s eNews writers are some of the most brightness women in the world. Women such as, Kristin Bender a writer for the Oakland Tribune, who has written about health, the sex industry, childbearing issues and alternative fuel for Women's eNews since 2004, and Louise Bernikow a graduate from Columbia and Oxford universities, a Fulbright scholar, and author of many feminists books, are amongst the brightness authors that contribute to Women’s eNews.

Women’s eNews has been successful for the past nine years mostly because of it’s writers and it’s Editor in chief Rita Henley’s ability to rely on the best practices of journalism and seek out the best stories every day. Also its commentaries, which are distributed each Wednesday, are written by prominent advocates and its monthly column in the media, uncovering Gender, and update of its page each week with an editorial cartoon by Pulitzer prize winner Ann Telnaes, has all been a contributing factor in its success, and hopefully for many years to come.
