Despite All Odds

Ms. Magazine had a very humble beginning in December of 1971, humble in that it was born from a "one-shot" sample insert" in the New York Magazine, it was decribed by its founding editor Letty Cottin Pogrebin, as "a movement into a magazine."Born at a time in history when the feminist movement ignored and considered irrelevant in "main stream media" and considered finished before it even begun. Fortunately though when the "one shot"test copies was released to newstands, Ms. was accepted by women with open arms selling out 300,ooo copies nationwide. In addition to its success from its consception Ms. continues to make its mark acheiving a series of firsts; "first U.S. magazine to feature prominent American women demanding the repeal of laws that criminalized abortion, the first to explain and advocate for the ERA, to rate presidential candidates on women's issues, to put domestic violence and sexual harassment on the cover of a women's magazine, to feature feminist protest of pornography, to commission and feature a national study on date rape, and to blow the whistle on the undue influence of advertising on magazine journalism." Even today Ms. continues to give a voice to issues relevant to women although people like Harry Reasoner a network news anchor said "I'll give it six months before they run out of things to say." Years later Ms. proves that women still have a whole lot to say like on its Summer 2006 cover feturing the relevance of the iraq war and how it affects women and in summer 2009 issue it hightlights the strength of a woman, capable of doing it all; "Mom 2.0 SHE BlOGS, SHE TWEETS, SHE RISES UP! Like this cover we can definitely see that Ms. still rises up despite all odds!

  1. Awesome blog, it's great to see that they were very successful despite negative feedback it received at first. I especially like the MOM 2.0, because it reminds me of my sister who's a mother who does a lot and..blogs & tweets! :)
