GlobalVoicesOnline.org

Global Voices is an amalgamation of international citizen media and blogs from more than 200 contributing volunteer writers and part-time editors globally. It began as a blog in 2005 and was co-founded by Rebecca Mackinnon, former CNN Beijing and Tokyo Bureau Chief, and Ethan Zuckerman, a technologist and expert on Africa, during their time as Berkman fellows at Harvard University (GlobalVoices). The idea for starting the blog came after a meeting held in 2004 discussing international blogging. Global Voices then experienced tremendous growth because of the help of Reuters, the MacArthur Foundation, and its contributors (GlobalVoices). Global Voices is now an incorporated non-profit organization in the Netherlands; as a non-profit it goes by the name Stitching Global Voices.

The main purpose of Global Voices is to provide a forum for news and opinions outside of the United States and Europe, or in other words, for voices not normally represented in mainstream media. To help spread its impact, Global Voices is connected to several projects, some of which have become websites with communities of their own. Projects include Global Voices Advocacy, Rising Voices, Lingua Global Voices translation project which provides the GlobalVoicesOnline.org on independent websites in more than 15 languages, and Voices without Votes amongst others. Global Voices is both non-partisan and non-denominational which is very consistent with its purpose of providing a space for a diverse pool of voices not traditionally heard from.
